Richard "Dick" Blaine Bierer
06-24-2009

Richard Blaine "Dick" Bierer was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania the second son of Wallace and Ivy Marie (Greene) Bierer. He lived his entire youthful life in Uniontown graduating from High School and going on to trade school. In 1942, he joined the Military and served his country as a Quartermaster. Upon returning home, he enrolled in Remington Rand Company's training school in Chicago, Illinois and continued to work for Remington as a technician in the Chicago area, moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1948. He met and later married Charlotte June Arend on May 22, 1948 in a small ceremony at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, where they made their home and raised their two children, Cathleen and Thomas. They continued to live in Sioux Falls until the time of Charlotte's death in 2006. During his lifetime, he held a variety of positions including working with Remington Rand, The BookStore, as a photography specialist, and Best Business Products, as an office machines technician. He also owned and operated a small appliance repair shop, C & B Small Appliances. But his favorite and most rewarding positions involved serving others, and being involved in his family's activities. Dick led a very full life enjoying fishing, wood working, his children's activities, music, friendships and serving his God and church family. Among his many and varied activities were Boy Scout leader, active member or the Legion of Mary, originator of the Music Booster Club at O'Gorman High School, and attending his children's activities. He became interested and felt called to serve God through the Permanent Deaconate Program, being one of the first lay men to be ordained in this program in the Sioux Falls Diocese twenty five years ago. As part of his ministry, he and Charlotte worked with couples in marriage preparation, ministering to members of the church in many ways, performing many baptisms, and later starting and serving as the manager of the St. Vincent DePaul Society Thrift Store, until his retirement. Dick's family include his two children, Cathy Jacobson and husband Bill, their two children Christopher and Michael, his son, Tom and wife Lisa (Fiorello) and their children Peter, his wife Lauren, and their children Charlotte and Miriam, Mia and her husband, Joe Eckes, and Evan and Mairin. He is also survived by his older brother Edward and his wife Anne, and younger sister, Gayle McKinney and her husband John all of Pennsylvania; along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded into eternal life, by his wife, Charlotte, and his mother and father. He spent the final years of his life living in Mankato, MN at Hillcrest Health Care Center where he made many friendships. In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family asks that monetary memorials be sent to Hillcrest Health Care Center Activities Department. 714 Southbend Ave, Mankato, MN 56001-6073. Dick was a very kind, gentle and loving man. He will be remembered as being a compassionate and passionate man about everything he loved, his family, his God, and his friends. Visitation will be Monday, 12 PM at St. Mary Church with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 PM. Go with God, Dad, we will miss you greatly!
