Michael John Herman
03-14-2024

Michael John Herman, 57 of Sioux Falls, SD passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 14 in hospice care after a lengthy illness.

Mike, along with his twin sister, Michelle, was born in Sioux Falls on February 16, 1967, the third son of Jim and Darlene (Gibson) Herman. He grew up and received his education in Sioux Falls where he graduated from Washington High School. He was united in marriage with Kelley Tschetter in 2011.

Those that knew Mike best will always remember his hearty laugh, and the twinkle in his eye when he was up to something, and his sheer joy for family vacations in Okoboji. Mike loved his family and friends dearly and honored traditions and time spent with them like no other.

Mike was a big kid at heart and his niece and nephews meant the world to him. He loved spoiling them and being their “fun uncle” – especially when they were little. Mike's favorite things included Christmas, the Green Bay Packers, movies, reading, grilling, a cold beer on a hot day, playing games, and general shenanigans. Mike had an incredible memory and an uncanny knack for remembering even the smallest details of events that others had long forgotten – he was the undisputed historian of the family.

Mike never shied away from a good debate about any number of things, and his sense of humor and quick wit never failed to make everyone laugh - including himself - and he retained that sense of humor and quick wit to the very end. Mike worked a variety of jobs over the years but was most proud of the time spent working with the family construction company and, years later, was still regaling us with embellished (or maybe not so embellished) stories of all the pranks he and the rest of the crew pulled on each other.

Mike fought the good fight with health issues from the day he was born until they were just too much for him. He rests in peace and comfort now for the first time in a long time. We will miss him tremendously.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Darlene, brother, Don, maternal and paternal grandparents, and many aunts and uncles. Grateful for having shared his life are his siblings, Bob (Nancy) Herman, Barb Herman, Patty (Kevin) Kase, and Michelle (James) Herman, sister-in-law Jean (Bill Storm) Herman, niece Christina (Ethan) Jones, and nephews Tim (Erica) Herman and John (Lexy Timm) Herman, great nephew, Lucas, and great niece, Zelda, along with many cousins and friends.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff of Good Samaritan Society and Sanford Hospice for their kind, patient, tender, and compassionate care that allowed Mike to be with us as long as possible.  A private family service will be held.
