Brenda Kay Thompson
08-27-2021

Brenda Kay (Schroetlin) Thompson, 56, passed away Friday, August 27, 2021, surrounded by family. She was strong and courageous during her five-year battle with cancer.

Brenda was born to Don and Dianne (Flickinger) Schroetlin September 27, 1964, in Hastings, Nebraska. She grew up in Sutton, Nebraska, active in local activities. With the love and faith of her parents, three sisters and one brother, Brenda was given a strong foundation of faith and kindness. She would carry, with grace, these qualities throughout her life as she married and raised her own family.

Brenda was united in marriage with James B. Thompson, Jr. on August 17, 1991, in Sioux Falls. Together they loved and laughed for thirty years. She devoted her life to raising their son, Creighton.

As a dedicated, compassionate elementary teacher for over twenty years, Brenda touched the lives of hundreds of kindergarten and first grade students. She received her masters degree from the University of Sioux Falls. Her energy amazed all who knew her. Her expertise in finding bargains, documenting memories, visiting garage sales, baking sweets, and locating sales were her passion. She was selfless and giving, always finding the perfect gift for others and bringing joy to those who knew her.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband: Jim; and son: Creighton (Madeline), Arvada, Colorado; parents: Don and Dianne Schroetlin, Sun City West, Arizona; three sisters: Connie (Ted) Dolezal, Casa Grande, Arizona, Debra Adams, Casa Grande, Arizona, Dee (Michael) Van Donselaar, Phoenix, Arizona; and brother: Jacob (Celeste) Schroetlin, Kinsley, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews along with a host of friends. Brenda was preceded in death by her stepson, Byron Thompson, father and mother-in-law, Jim and Ruth Thompson, and sister-in-law, Susan (Thompson) Marinelli.

Celebration of life will begin at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1300 South Sertoma Avenue, Sioux Falls. Memorial gifts can be in the form of donations in her name to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society (3720 E. Benson Road, Sioux Falls) or Laura B. Anderson Elementary School (1600 N. Wayland Avenue, Sioux Falls).
