Garland D. McCarthy

Garland D. McCarthy, 88, passed away peacefully at the Golden Living Center in Madison, South Dakota on May 6, 2010. He was born on March 13, 1922 to Jack and Florence (Spinner) McCarthy in Miller, South Dakota. He was united in marriage to Clara Berniece Noonan on March 1, 1949 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Garland enlisted in the US Army Corp in 1942 serving our country during WW II. In 1946, he started working full-time for the South Dakota Air National Guard until his retirement in 1977 after 35 years as Chief Master Sergeant. Garland was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He loved golf, dancing and the lake life. Survivors include his son: Collin, his wife: Kim; three grandchildren: Gerard and Malorie McCarthy, Madison, SD, and Matt McCarthy, Sioux Falls, SD; one brother: Red (Arlene) of Adrian, MN; and his dance partner and special friend: Jo Corley, Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Berniece and two brothers. Visitation will be Friday, 5 PM at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home with a Scripture Vigil at 6 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, 10:30 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church with burial to follow at St. Michael Cemetery with Full Military Rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 625.
