Ronald McConahie

Ronald McConahie, age 74, of Sioux Falls, died unexpectedly of natural causes Monday, February 11, 2013 at his home.

Ron was born on November 11, 1938 in Vermillion, S.D. After graduating from Vermillion High School, he enlisted in the National Guard and later entered the Navy.

Upon discharge from the Navy, Ron lived and worked in Los Angeles, California for a short time before returning to South Dakota. While in Vermillion, he worked at the bakery, where he met his future wife, Barbara Harmison.

Ron and Barbara were married August 24, 1963 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, SD and moved to Sioux Falls, where he started his career as a guard at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Ron worked at the Penitentiary for over 30 years and at the time of his retirement was the Work Release Administrator. After an early retirement, Ron enjoyed his days pursuing his many hobbies, traveling, and enjoying the activities of his daughters and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years: Barb, his daughters: Mary (Jonathan) Toso of Canton and Deb McConahie of Cedar Falls, Iowa; grandchildren: Rebecca, Jacob, Matthew and Elizabeth, all of Canton; and his brothers: James McConahie and Michael Walz. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur McConahie and Mildred Walz and his sister, Joan Burke.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls with Pastor Tony Haglund officiating. The family will be at the church to greet family and friends at 12:00pm.
